How to Configure and Manage SEO Metadata for Knowledge Base Articles
SEO metadata determines how a knowledge base article appears in search engine results and when it is shared on social media platforms. Clear and accurate metadata can improve an article’s visibility, discoverability, and click-through rate. This article explains how administrators can configure SEO-related settings and how authors can add, update, generate, and validate SEO metadata for knowledge base articles.
BoldDesk provides the following SEO metadata fields:
| Field | Description |
|---|---|
| Meta Title | The title displayed in search engine results. |
| Meta Description | A brief summary displayed below the title in search engine results. |
| OG Title | The title displayed when the article is shared on social media platforms. |
| OG Description | The description displayed in social media sharing previews. |
Authors can manually enter and update these fields when creating or editing an article. Administrators can also make all SEO metadata fields mandatory before an article can be saved as a draft or published. Additionally, BoldDesk AI can generate a Meta Description based on the article’s content when Article SEO Optimization is enabled.
Article SEO Optimization generates suggestions only for the Meta Description field. Authors must manually enter the Meta Title, OG Title, and OG Description.
Configure Article SEO Optimization
Article SEO Optimization allows BoldDesk AI to generate Meta Description suggestions for knowledge base articles.
Enabling or disabling this setting does not affect the availability of the SEO metadata fields. Authors can manually enter or update all metadata fields regardless of whether Article SEO Optimization is enabled.
Enable Article SEO Optimization
To enable AI-powered Meta Description generation:
-
Navigate to AI Module > AI Copilot.
-
Enable AI Copilot if it is not already enabled.
-
Select Smart Article Assistant.
-
Turn on Article SEO Optimization.
-
Save the changes.
After Article SEO Optimization is enabled, authors can generate Meta Description suggestions from the SEO section of a knowledge base article.
Disable Article SEO Optimization
To disable AI-powered Meta Description generation:
-
Navigate to AI Module > AI Copilot.
-
Select Smart Article Assistant.
-
Turn off Article SEO Optimization.
-
Save the changes.
Disabling Article SEO Optimization disables only AI-generated Meta Description suggestions. It does not hide the SEO section, remove existing metadata, or prevent authors from entering metadata manually.

- OG Description
Enable mandatory SEO metadata
To make SEO metadata mandatory:
-
Navigate to Admin > Agent Portal > Knowledge Base.
-
Locate Enforce SEO-related Attributes.
-
Enable the option.
-
Save the changes.
After the setting is enabled, authors must provide values for all required SEO metadata fields before they can save an article as a draft or publish it.
- This enforcement will apply only to articles that are publicly visible.
- SEO metadata enforcement applies both when saving an article as a draft and when publishing it.
Disable mandatory SEO metadata
To make SEO metadata optional:
-
Navigate to Admin > Agent Portal > Knowledge Base.
-
Locate Enforce SEO-related Attributes.
-
Disable the option.
-
Save the changes.
After the setting is disabled:
- Authors can save or publish articles without completing all SEO metadata fields.
- The SEO metadata fields remain available for optional manual entry.
- Existing SEO metadata remains unchanged.
SEO attribute validation (Meta Title / Meta Description)
When updating Meta Title or Meta Description in the SEO tab of a Knowledge Base article, BoldDesk validates the value before saving. If the value contains an unsupported character, BoldDesk displays a validation error under the field indicating that the value cannot contain the specific character (for example: “Invalid or value cannot contain ‘<’.”).
What to do: Remove or replace the exact character shown in the error message, then save again.
