How to Resolve Gmail IMAP Connection Errors in BoldDesk

Updated:

When connecting a Gmail inbox in BoldDesk, BoldDesk may display the following error message:

An error occurred when connecting to your inbox. Verify your IMAP settings and try again.

This error commonly occurs when either of the following is true:

  • The Gmail account password entered in BoldDesk is not accepted for IMAP sign-in.
  • IMAP access is not enabled for the Gmail mailbox.

In Gmail, BoldDesk must authenticate using an App Password (not the regular Gmail password). This requirement applies even if the Gmail account does not use multi-factor authentication.

Resolution

Step 1: Generate and use a Google App Password (required)

BoldDesk must use a Google App Password because Google security controls may block IMAP access when a third-party application uses the primary account password.

  1. Sign in to your Google Account.
  2. Go to Security.
  3. Generate an App Password.
  4. Copy the generated App Password.
  5. In BoldDesk IMAP configuration, enter the App Password as the mailbox password.

Do not use the regular Gmail account password in BoldDesk for IMAP authentication.

Step 2: Enable IMAP in Gmail and configure IMAP in BoldDesk

After generating the App Password:

  1. Confirm IMAP access is enabled for the Gmail account.

  2. Configure the Gmail IMAP settings in BoldDesk using the App Password from Step 1.

Frequently Asked Questions

1. Why does BoldDesk show “An error occurred when connecting to your inbox. Verify your IMAP settings and try again.” for Gmail?
This error usually occurs when BoldDesk cannot authenticate the Gmail mailbox through IMAP. In most cases, this happens because the regular Gmail account password is used instead of a Google App Password, or because IMAP access is not enabled for the Gmail account.

2. Can I use my regular Gmail account password in BoldDesk for IMAP setup?
No. When configuring a Gmail inbox in BoldDesk, you must use a Google App Password for IMAP authentication. The regular Gmail account password is not accepted for this connection.

3. Do I still need a Google App Password if multifactor authentication is not enabled?
Yes. BoldDesk must use a Google App Password for Gmail IMAP authentication even if the Gmail account does not use multifactor authentication.

4. What else should I verify if the Gmail inbox still does not connect?
If the connection still fails, make sure that the Google App Password was entered correctly in BoldDesk, and IMAP access is enabled for the Gmail mailbox.
