Azure DevOps Integration Troubleshooting Guide
The Azure DevOps integration in BoldDesk allows agents to create Azure DevOps work items from tickets, link existing work items, view work item details, and synchronize supported comments, status, and priority updates.
This article explains how to resolve validation, resource, ticket-linking, webhook, and processing errors displayed while using the Azure DevOps integration.
For instructions on installing the integration, mapping organizations and projects, creating work items, or linking existing work items, explore the Related Articles section.
Prerequisites
Before troubleshooting, ensure that:
- The Azure DevOps app is installed and authorized in BoldDesk.
- Third-party application access via OAuth is enabled in the Azure DevOps organization.
- The required organization is selected and its projects are mapped in BoldDesk.
- The agent has permission to use the Azure DevOps app in BoldDesk.
- The agent can access the relevant Azure DevOps organization and project.
BoldDesk uses its own integration permissions. Permission to create work items directly in Azure DevOps does not automatically grant permission to create or link work items through BoldDesk.
Review the Azure DevOps Configuration
To review the integration configuration:
- Go to Admin > Marketplace.
- Search for and select Azure DevOps.
- Open the installed app.
- Review the selected Azure DevOps organization and mapped projects.
- Review the configured synchronization actions and app permissions.
- Save the configuration after making changes.
Only organizations and projects configured in the Azure DevOps integration are available when agents create or link work items.
Error Messages and Resolutions
General Processing Error
Error message
An error occurred when processing Azure DevOps integration.
This error appears when BoldDesk cannot complete the requested Azure DevOps operation.
Resolution
- Refresh the ticket and retry the operation once.
- Confirm that the Azure DevOps app is installed in BoldDesk.
- Verify that the required organization and project are mapped under Admin > Marketplace > Azure DevOps.
- Confirm that the affected project or work item is available in Azure DevOps.
- If the error continues, review Integration failure logs under Admin > Audit Logs.
- Contact BoldDesk Support if the failure details do not identify a configuration issue that can be corrected.
When contacting support, provide the BoldDesk ticket ID, Azure DevOps organization and project names, Work Item ID where applicable, exact error message, and time of the failure.
Azure DevOps Account Not Found
Error message
Azure DevOps account not found.
This error appears when BoldDesk cannot retrieve the Azure DevOps account associated with the installed integration.
Resolution
- Go to Admin > Marketplace > Azure DevOps.
- Confirm that the Azure DevOps app is installed.
- Review the selected organization and mapped projects.
- Confirm that the organization remains available in Azure DevOps.
- Reconnect the Azure DevOps integration if the configuration page provides that option.
- Save the configuration and retry the operation.
- If the error continues, contact BoldDesk Support.
Required-Field Errors
The following errors appear when information required to create or link an Azure DevOps work item is missing.
| Error message | How to resolve |
|---|---|
| Organization ID required. | Select an Azure DevOps organization before selecting a project. |
| Organization name required. | Select the organization again. If the organization is not listed, ask an administrator to review the Azure DevOps integration configuration. |
| Project ID required. | Select a mapped project from the selected Azure DevOps organization. |
| Project name required. | Select the project again. If the project is not listed, ask an administrator to review the project mapping. |
| Work item type required. | Select an available Work Item Type for the selected project. |
| Area path required. | Select an Area Path after selecting the Project and Work Item Type. |
| Title required. | Enter a title for the Azure DevOps work item. |
| Description required. | Enter a description for the Azure DevOps work item. |
| Azure DevOps work item ID required. | Enter the Work Item ID when linking an existing Azure DevOps work item. |
| Azure DevOps link ID required. | Refresh the ticket, reopen the Azure DevOps app, and repeat the link operation. If the error continues, contact BoldDesk Support. |
Azure DevOps link ID is used internally to maintain the association between a BoldDesk ticket and an Azure DevOps work item. Agents do not need to enter this value manually.
Invalid Organization or Project
Applicable errors
Invalid organization.Invalid project.
These errors indicate that BoldDesk cannot validate the selected Azure DevOps organization or project.
Resolution
- Confirm that the organization or project exists in Azure DevOps.
- Go to Admin > Marketplace > Azure DevOps.
- Review the selected organization and mapped projects.
- Select the required organization or project again.
- Save the configuration.
- Refresh the ticket and retry the operation.
If the organization or project is available in Azure DevOps and correctly configured in BoldDesk but the error continues, contact BoldDesk Support.
Linked Work Item Not Found
Error message
Linked work item not found.
This error appears when BoldDesk cannot retrieve the Azure DevOps work item associated with the ticket.
Resolution
- Note the Work Item ID displayed in BoldDesk, if available.
- Search for the Work Item ID in Azure DevOps.
- Confirm that the work item exists in the selected project.
- Refresh the BoldDesk ticket and reopen the Azure DevOps app.
- If BoldDesk displays the linked item, unlink it before linking a replacement.
- If the item cannot be retrieved or unlinked, contact BoldDesk Support.
Unlinking removes the association between the BoldDesk ticket and the Azure DevOps work item. It does not delete the work item from Azure DevOps.
Ticket-Eligibility Errors
The following errors appear when the current BoldDesk ticket state prevents an Azure DevOps work item from being linked.
| Error message | How to resolve |
|---|---|
| Azure DevOps work item cannot be linked to a deleted ticket. | Link the work item to an active ticket. If the ticket was deleted accidentally and the applicable BoldDesk permissions allow recovery, restore the ticket before retrying. |
| Azure DevOps work item cannot be linked to a spam ticket. | Confirm that the ticket is legitimate. If the applicable BoldDesk permissions allow it, remove the spam classification and retry. Do not change the classification of genuine spam. |
Duplicate-Link and Link-Limit Errors
Work Item Already Linked
Error message
The work item you are trying to link is already linked to this ticket.
This error appears when the selected Azure DevOps work item is already associated with the current BoldDesk ticket.
Resolution
- Close the linking dialog.
- Refresh the Azure DevOps app panel.
- Review the existing linked work item.
- Continue using the existing association.
If the wrong work item is linked:
- Select Unlink for the existing work item.
- Confirm the unlink action.
- Search for and link the correct work item.
Maximum Link Limit Reached
Error message
Linked work items exceed maximum limit.
This error appears when the BoldDesk ticket already has an Azure DevOps work item linked to it.
Resolution
- Open the Azure DevOps app from the ticket.
- Review the existing linked work item.
- If the work item is correct, continue using the existing association.
- To associate a different work item, select Unlink.
- Confirm the unlink action.
- Create or link the replacement work item.
A single BoldDesk ticket can be linked to only one Azure DevOps work item. The same Azure DevOps work item can be linked to multiple BoldDesk tickets.
BoldDesk supports one linked Azure DevOps work item per ticket.
Invalid Webhook Object
Error message
Invalid webhook object.
This error appears when BoldDesk cannot validate the webhook information used by the Azure DevOps integration.
Resolution
- Retry the affected operation once.
- Confirm that the Azure DevOps integration is installed and configured.
- Confirm that the affected organization and project are mapped.
- If the error continues, review Integration failure logs under Admin > Audit Logs.
- Contact BoldDesk Support and provide:
- BoldDesk ticket ID.
- Azure DevOps Work Item ID, if applicable.
- Organization and project names.
- Exact error message.
- Date, time, and time zone of the failure.
Webhook information is managed by the integration. Agents should not attempt to manually create or modify webhook data.
