How to Show Data Labels for Chart Widgets in BoldDesk Dashboards

Updated:

Data Labels display chart values directly on a Chart Widget, allowing users to view data without hovering over individual points. This improves readability and helps users quickly identify trends, compare values across grouped data and multiple series, and gain insights at a glance.

This article explains:

  • Which chart types support Data Labels
  • How to enable and configure Data Labels on a Chart Widget
  • How BoldDesk displays and applies Data Labels based on the selected chart type

By using Data Labels, users can interpret chart data more efficiently and make informed decisions directly from the visualization.

Prerequisites

  • You must have access to Dashboards and permission to create or edit widgets (with dashboard edit access)
  • You must have an existing Chart Widget

What are Data Labels?

A Data Label is a value rendered directly on the chart near the corresponding bar/column/point/line marker.

What is a Segment Data Label?

A Segment Data Label is the value shown for each segment within a stacked bar/column. This is used when a single bar/column is divided into multiple stacked segments (series).

Supported Chart Types and Label Options

Chart Type Supported Options

Stacked Bar, Stacked Column Data Label, Segment Data Label
100% Stacked Bar, 100% Stacked Column Segment Data Label

Chart Availability and Behavior

  • Chart-type availability
    • The label options shown depend on the selected Chart Type.
    • If a label option is not supported for the chart type, it is not available for selection.
  • Stacked charts
    • Data Label typically displays a value at the bar/column level (commonly representing a total or a single value depending on widget configuration).
    • Segment Data Label displays values for each stacked segment (each series portion of the stack).
  • 100% stacked charts
    • Only Segment Data Label is supported.
    • Values displayed follow the chart’s 100% stacked behavior (relative contribution within the stack), based on how the widget is configured to render values.

Use Cases

  • Dashboard review without hover
Enable Data Label on a Column chart to read exact counts directly during operational reviews.
  • Compare categories within a stacked chart
Enable Segment Data Label on a Stacked Bar chart to compare each series contribution within the same category.
  • Presenting proportions
Use Segment Data Label on a 100% Stacked Column chart to quickly interpret how each series contributes to the whole for each group.

Troubleshooting Common Errors

  • I don’t see the Data Labels option

    • Confirm the widget is a Chart Widget (not a table/list widget).
    • Verify the chart type is supported (see the supported chart types table).
    • Check that you have permission to edit dashboard widgets.
  • I don’t see Segment Data Label

    • Segment Data Labels are available only for:
      • Stacked Bar, Stacked Column
      • 100% Stacked Bar, 100% Stacked Column
  • Labels appear cluttered or hard to read

    • Consider switching from Segment Data Label to Data Label (for stacked charts where both are available).
    • Reduce the number of series or groups shown in the widget configuration if possible.

Frequently Asked Questions

  1. What’s the difference between Data Label and Segment Data Label?
Data Label shows values directly on the chart for the overall data point. Segment Data Label shows values for each segment in a stacked bar/column.

  2. Which chart types support Data Labels?
Bar, Column, and Line charts support Data Label. Stacked Bar/Column charts support Data Label and Segment Data Label. 100% Stacked Bar/Column charts support Segment Data Label only.

  3. Can I use Data Labels on 100% stacked charts?
100% stacked charts support Segment Data Label only.

  4. Why can’t I select Segment Data Label for a Line chart?
Segment Data Labels apply only to stacked chart types. Line charts support Data Label only.

  5. Do Data Labels remove hover tooltips?
No. Data Labels display values directly on the chart, and hover tooltips (if available in the widget) may still appear depending on the chart behavior.
