Field Type Management: How to Change a Field Type After Creation

Updated:

Once a field is created, its type cannot be changed. This restriction is in place to prevent potential data inconsistencies. For example, if a field is initially set as a date type and later changed to a dropdown, the existing data may no longer be compatible with the new format.

Solution:
If a field was created with an incorrect type, follow these steps:

  1. Deactivate or Delete the Field:
    • Navigate to the field settings and deactivate or delete the field.
  2. Recreate the Field:
    • Create a new field with the correct type.
  • Data Backup: Ensure all data associated with the field is backed up before deletion or deactivation to avoid data loss.
  • Impact: Deleting or deactivating a field may affect workflows, reports, or integrations that rely on it. Plan accordingly.

Example Scenario:
If a field was mistakenly created as a “Text” type but should be a “Date” type:

  1. Deactivate the “Text” field.
  2. Create a new field with the “Date” type.
  3. Migrate or re-enter the data into the new field.
