How to Enable the External Forwarding in M365
Before enabling email forwarding in BoldDesk, it is crucial to verify with your M365 administrator whether external email forwarding is enabled. Failure to ensure this may result in receiving a bounce email as a consequence of M365’s default outbound spam protection. The text of the message will include this line:
550 5.7.520 Access denied, Your organization does not allow external forwarding. Please contact your administrator for further assistance. AS(7550)*
You can refer to this article for detailed instructions on how to enable external forwarding.
Enable the functionality of External Forwarding for Individual Mailboxes
- Log in to the M365 Defender as an administrator and navigate to the Anti-spam policies page: https://security.microsoft.com/antispam
Note: If you do not see the options or any policies listed on that page, please make sure you have logged in with an admin account or check that you have sufficient permission to create the policy. Please be aware that the policies displayed in your personal admin interface may vary from the ones depicted here, as the ones shown are solely the default policies.
- Click on Create policy and select Outbound.
- Give your new outbound spam filter policy a Name and Description.
- Click “Next” and search to find the user account you want to allow to forward, i.e., the email account that you are forwarding to BoldDesk, which will display under the “Users” field after you select it.
- Please proceed to click on Next once more. After that, scroll down to the section labelled Forwarding rules and click on the dropdown menu located under Automatic forwarding rules. From there, select the option “On - Forwarding is enabled.” Finally, click on Next.
- Please examine the settings on the final screen and select “Create” in order to generate a new outbound policy for the designated user(s).
